In the late Middle Agespriests who were no monks, were referred to as 'Pfaffen'. They lived in Passau in the so named 'Pfaffengasse'.The alley was closed with an iron gate until 1662, which is still remembered by the round arch on which a painting of St. Christopher has been emblazoned since 1925. Compared with the usual standard of the other streets in the Old Town, it has a respectable width and thus already indicates its former meaning. The stucco ornaments below some of the windows still show that these buildings were once owned by the church.
In the 'Pfaffenhaus', on each floor up to five priests lived in small cells next to each other.
The historic walls of the apartments and maisonette suites in the listed Pfaffenhaus have been completely renovated and brought up to the latest technical standards. With a lot of intuition and architectural know-how, it was possible to combine the charm of the past with new design, style and luxury. Old building materials, unusual room concepts and elegant furnishings create a sublime feeling of living. In such a central location, and in the best neighborhood, you may enjoy your Passau stay carefree.
